Choice Filling Tips — The Most Critical Step
Choice filling determines which college you get. Most students make mistakes here. These tips are based on patterns from JoSAA 2022–2025.
Fill as many choices as possible
There is no penalty for filling more choices. Students who fill 150+ choices have significantly better upgrade rates across rounds than those who fill 20–30.
Don't ignore branch over college
A CSE seat at an NIT ranked #15 often has better placements than Mechanical at NIT ranked #3. Research branch placements, not just institute rankings.
Use Home State quota strategically
If you're from Rajasthan, add MNIT Jaipur under both HS and OS quota as separate choices. HS cutoffs for NITs in your state are often 1000–3000 ranks better than OS.
Keep Float or Slide until Round 5
Freeze only in Round 6. Rounds 1–5 often free up seats as students withdraw. Many students get significant upgrades in Rounds 4–5.
Check if your board meets the 75% criteria
75% aggregate in Class 12 is mandatory (65% for SC/ST). If you're close to this threshold, ensure you have board certificates ready for verification.
The seat acceptance fee is refundable (partially)
If you withdraw before the final round, the seat acceptance fee minus a processing charge is refunded. Don't let fee anxiety stop you from registering early.
Documents Required for JoSAA Reporting
Carry originals + 2 sets of self-attested photocopies. Missing even one document can delay your admission.
- JEE Main 2026 Admit Card & Scorecard
- JEE Advanced 2026 Scorecard (for IIT seats)
- Class 10 Certificate & Mark Sheet
- Class 12 Certificate & Mark Sheet
- Category Certificate — OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS (if applicable)
- PwD Certificate (if applicable)
- Birth Certificate or Class 10 certificate showing DOB
- 4 passport-size photographs (white background)
- Aadhaar Card / Voter ID / Passport
Freeze vs Float vs Slide — Explained
After each round of seat allotment, you choose one of three options for the next round:
You are happy with your current allotment. No further upgrades — seat is locked. Choose this in Round 6.
Consider upgrades to higher-preference choices within the same institute only. Good if you want a better branch at the same college.
Consider upgrades across all higher-preference choices — any institute, any branch. Best option to keep until Round 5.

What is the difference between Freeze, Slide and Float in JoSAA?
Freeze means you are satisfied with your current allotment and want to lock it — no further upgrades. Float means you want to be considered for a better choice in higher-preference programs at the same institute. Slide means you want upgrades across institutes as well.

Required documents include: JEE Main/Advanced scorecard, Class 10 & 12 mark sheets and certificates, category certificate (if applicable), PwD certificate (if applicable), passport-size photographs, and Aadhaar card. Original documents with self-attested photocopies are required.
What happens if I don't report after seat allotment in JoSAA?
If you don't report to the allotted institute after Round 6, your seat is cancelled and the seat acceptance fee is forfeited. You will not be considered in any further JoSAA rounds.
How do I fill choices wisely in JoSAA counselling?
Add as many choices as possible (200+ if needed). Put your dream colleges first and safe options last. Include all quota variations (Home State + Other State for NITs). Research previous year cutoffs using our JoSAA college predictor to assess realistic chances before filling choices.
